description The Vocational Training School (VTS) is a ministry of Youth With A Mission Hopeland which aims at equipping the underprevileged and disadvantaged teenage children with skills. It started as a community assessed need to equip the local community with relevant job skills to give them more hope for their future in addition to introducing them to the provision of and relationship with God. The goals of VTS are to evangelize with biblical principals and discipleship, and also to teach practical skills to change their lives by empowering them to earn a living.
In 1993, the first VTS began with a class of 12 boys, all from one village. The VTS buildings constructed then were a starting point for the physical base here at Hopeland, until then it was undeveloped property. Since then it has gradually expanded the recruitment to sixteen villages. We work with local village churches to encourage involvement and communication as well as follow-up and accountability for the students. Recruitment is done through local churches, and then they are interviewed to ensure that the students will put the skills and education to use.
VTS offers its training to disadvantaged youth, between 13 and 18 years old, from any religious background or life experience that can prove that they have no other opportunity to continue in the formal education system.
Vocational Training is comprised of two schools, one for the males and another for females. For the male students, they are taught carpentry and joinery, how to lay bricks and to construct concrete. They are also exposed to farming, through the farm at the YWAM base here, which produces a variety of goods for consumption. The YWAM base is an excellent place for these young men to put into practice what they are taught. Because of the nature of the work, and because most of the apprentices are illiterate, they are taught by doing.
This "on the job" method is beneficial to the students and also to YWAM. When they are suitably proficient at this skill, they would be allowed to join the construction team here at the base. Buildings are going up here at an extraordinary rate, so there is plenty of work to be done.
The young ladies are taught the skills of baking, tailoring and also farming techniques. They are also taught on the job, as this has been found to be the most effective method for them to acquire knowledge. The girls are able to sell their produce, tailored items, or baked goods, which then provides the financing for their next project.
Students in both schools are given a variety of skills to learn so to find a possible livelihood that fits their individual gifting and desire. It is the desire of the staff to expand into other areas of training and education. These will include car mechanics and plumbing - two invaluable skills in Uganda. In addition to these the leadership want to have a workshop to house the carpentry school, and double up in providing the community with a service.
STAFFS
The vocational training school is entirely staffed by volunteers and expatriates who have got a yearn to pass on skills to people. There is also an allowance for short term staff members (non-YWAMers) for six months. Long term staff member should have completed the Discipleship Training School with YWAM. We expect staff to be Christians who desire to their faith. We welcome teams.
A garage is planned for the car mechanics, and a building for the plumbing school. Finally, an oven for the females, to practice their baking skills, and to serve the local community would be a great addition.
This program has seen great success in seeing lives totally changed, from having no hope to leading productive and respectable lives. Students leave here feeling empowered, loved, and accepted. Some have even gone on to further government-level training.
